The 4G and 4G LTE part was a bit confusing for me at the start since I haven’t been quite interested in networking as a subject through my degree. Research helped me come back to the following consequences:

4G LTE is currently the most advanced in terms of speed claiming to have a download date speed between 5 and 12 megabits per second*. Carrier quality, Coverage Area and Device Quality are going to be key factors in the speed as well.

4G on the other end has a download speed between 3 and 8 megabits per second*. Congestion, Wireless Carrier and the Technology used by the Carrier you’re using are key factors in speed.

3G Networks on the other hand gets you a Data Download speed between 800 and 950 kilobits per second*.

One thing that I liked online today was a map from Ufone that showed the Citywide Coverage Area of the new Network. I was quite disappointed to see a lot of areas still void of coverage which luckily didn’t include any of my office locations or residential location.

Downsize:

3G Network don’t seem to have any significant downsize. The launch of Trial Services already is a symptom why they were an easy deploy.

4G as well as the 4G LTE Networks are not easy to deploy. This means, coverage of 4G is going to be a huge concern for people in Pakistan. So initially, you can expect 4G and 4G LTE only in major cities of Pakistan and then expect it to cover the rest of the country.

Background:

With the auction of four 3G licenses sold and one 4G to the four telecommunication companies in Pakistan namely Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor and Zong. Zong claimed the only 4G License available for auction along with a 3G License, the first company in Pakistan to claim that title. Almost all of the companies that claimed the 3G licenses have launched Trial services in selected cities of Pakistan.

Different sources claim a different date against the launch of 4G Services from Zong in Pakistan but it seems that Zong will take a while before the services are deployed. Meanwhile, with the new entry of Warid in the run, their spokesman claim that it will take less time for Warid to deploy their 4G LTE wild card entry. Warid requested PTA to use its former Technology Independent License and deploy 4G LTE Services. It seems as if PTA has allowed so or they will soon since Warid has already started doing a marketing campaign with the slogan “The best is yet to come – 4G LTE”.

* The speeds mentioned are attainable speeds considering other factors as well. The maximum attainable speed during the tests were higher.
